I would rather prefer using a dedicated / or another server than the domain controller for this. But, that depends on the usage and the load you will have on the server.

The network will have about 8 Win XP clients. and run backupsystem and controll the internet trafic of course. btw you know what an sql licens for a network like this should cost? I saw one at dell for about 6400$ but they also had one for 1400$...
|||Like I said, it depends on the workload of the server, but if there are only sporadic and non heavy workloads on the server you can put it on a exsiting server, but I would always suggest NOT to put it on the domain controller (just from my experiences).
Aas far as I can evaluate your situation form my 15000 feet view of your needs, you need a server licence and min. 8 CALs , but you should better clarify this with your certified licence software vendor.
